Thou shall not kill! The economics of conict, religion and social capital
نویسنده
چکیده
In history and in everyday life it has often been observed that on one hand religion can enhance peaceful behaviour, but that it can on the other hand as well lead to violent extremism and intolerance. This paper argues with the help of a simple theoretical conict model that the level of education matters crucially for the impact religion has on the likelihood of conict. In particular, in a liberal and educated society religion is likely to be a good thing whereas this is not necessarily the case for societies with a lower level of education. Further, social capital is found to be a deterrent of appropriative conict. In the last part of the paper evolutionary aspects are analysed as well. JEL Classi cation: C72, D74, I20, Z12, Z13.
